Accessibility

Short version: this site is built to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. It works with a keyboard, it works with a screen reader, and all the moving stuff switches off if your system asks it to. If something here blocks you, email me and I'll fix it.

What I'm aiming for

The target is the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. That's the standard US courts and the Department of Justice point to when deciding whether a website is accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act. I want anyone to be able to find my videos and my socials here, however they browse.

What is in place

• Every link and button works with a keyboard, and there's a skip link so you don't have to tab through the header every time.
• Whatever you're focused on gets a bright outline, so you can see where you are.
• The page has proper landmarks and headings so a screen reader can jump around it.
• The drifting video rows, the animated logo, the custom submarine cursor and the looping background videos all stop if your operating system is set to reduce motion. The normal mouse pointer comes back too.
• If you move through the homepage with a keyboard, a pause button shows up in the corner of the top section. It stops the background video and the video rows. On the camp food page, the clip has the same button, and clicking the clip pauses it too.
• The submarine cursor also steps aside the moment you start navigating with Tab.
• Images that are purely decoration are hidden from screen readers instead of being read out as noise.
• Text stays readable when you zoom to 400%, and the layout works down to a 320 pixel wide screen.
• Nothing on the site flashes more than three times a second.

Where it falls short

These are the gaps I know about:

• The campsite game. The pixel game at explore the campsite is played with arrow keys on a canvas. It's keyboard operable, but a screen reader can't describe what's happening on screen, and there's no non-visual way to play it. It's a bonus toy rather than a way to get information, and nothing on the rest of the site depends on it.
• The video row. The strip of latest videos drifts sideways on its own. It stops for reduced motion, when you hover over it, and with the keyboard pause button. Every video in it is also on my YouTube channel, which is the more accessible way to browse them.
• Captions on the videos themselves. My videos live on YouTube, and captions there are a mix of ones I've uploaded and YouTube automatic ones. I'm working through the back catalogue adding proper ones.
• Other sites. YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook are outside my control and follow their own accessibility practices.

I've tested this site myself with a keyboard, with screen reader spot checks, and with automated tools. It hasn't had a formal third-party audit.

No accessibility overlay

This site doesn't use one of those floating accessibility widgets that promise instant compliance. They sit on top of a page without fixing the code underneath, a lot of screen reader users say they get in the way of the software they already use, and plenty of sites running one have been sued anyway. Fixing the actual markup takes longer and it's the part that works.

Tell me what page you were on, what you were trying to do, and what got in the way. Your browser and any assistive tech helps if you know it, but don't worry if you don't. I aim to reply within 5 business days with either the fix or a date for it. If you need something from this site in a different format, ask and I'll sort it out with you.

If you're not happy with my reply

You can raise it with the US Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, which takes complaints under the ADA. I'd much rather you came to me first so I can actually fix it, but that route is there.
