I'd never made one of these before. A bunch of you commented camping foods I should try, mountain pies was one of them, so I bought a hobo pie maker. White bread, apple pie filling and butter. It came out delicious. Next time I'd cook it a little less, put more butter and some cinnamon on the bread, and probably use cherry filling. When I opened it the filling leaked out the ends and it really hurt.

Delicious. Next time I'd put cherry filling in it and more cinnamon and butter on the bread.

What you need

• White bread
• Canned apple pie filling
• Butter
• Cinnamon (next time)

Gear

• Hobo pie maker (pie iron)
• A fire with coals

How to make it

1. Warm the empty pie maker over the fire for a minute so the butter melts onto it.
2. Butter the inside, lay in a slice of bread, add a spoonful of pie filling, and put the second slice on top.
3. Close it, hold it over the coals and rotate it every few minutes until the bread is golden. It leaks hot filling out the ends, so watch your fingers.
